When most people think of a trip to Australia, they rarely have skiing in mind. Yet Victoria's Mt Buller ski resort, just 250kms northeast of Melbourne, has a five-month long ski season and a range of challenging slopes that attract all kinds of power enthusiasts.
Just three hours' drive from the cosmopolitan state capital of Melbourne, Mount Buller rises over 1,800 metres above sea level and offers visitors a choice of 25 ski lifts and 7,000 beds. Skiing and snowboarding are the top activities here, closely followed by drinking and dining. Slopes are divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced runs, with the most being intermediate and Fanny's Finish being the hardest.
Mt Buller accommodation ranges from upmarket ski-in, ski-out hotels and quaint self-catering apartments to budget lodges and alpine bed and breakfasts set amid the snowy peaks. Many of the hotels here have excellent dining facilities as well as amenities such as swimming pools, saunas and spas to ease your aches after a hard day on the snow.
Aside from an overwhelming selection of winter sports including snowshoeing, snowtubing and tobogganing, Mount Buller Victoria offers visitors the chance to relax at an alpine spa retreat, watch a film at the cinema or take a scenic chairlift ride. Shoppers can take advantage of the multitude of winter sports gear shops and deck themselves out with cutting-edge equipment. Additionally, a small village supermarket is on hand for essentials.
Getting to Mt Buller is easy, with a single sealed road from Mansfield leading to the ski resort. Drivers need to exercise caution and ensure they bring along snow chains. During the ski season there are also frequent bus services for those who don't want to navigate the windy, mountain road. Once in Mount Buller village, a free trolley service shuttles visitors to slope access points.
